Credit: Crosbie Lorimer<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But all that changed very suddenly with Wednesday\u2019s official announcement that the club is to be the sixth Challenger for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-americas-cup\">38th America\u2019s Cup<\/a>. The club hosted the first Australian bid for the Auld Mug in 26 years, funded by the highly successful \u2013 and aptly named \u2013 Winning family.<\/p>\n<p>With a large media contingent packed tightly on the club\u2019s sunlit terrace, overlooking a sparkling Sydney Harbour, the core members of Team Australia were introduced.<\/p>\n<h2>Tom Slingsby to co-helm<\/h2>\n<p>Led by team CEO Grant Simmer, for whom this will be a record-breaking 13th America\u2019s Cup campaign, the nominated team thus far comprises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/americas-cup\/tom-slingsby-a-man-on-a-mission-136216\">Tom Slingsby<\/a> as Head of Sailing and co-helm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/americas-cup\/like-riding-in-a-tea-pot-through-moguls-why-well-miss-glenn-ashbys-americas-cup-commentary-154993\">Glenn Ashby<\/a> leading Design and Performance, and Tash Bryant, who has been the Flying Roos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/sailgp\">SailGP<\/a> strategist for the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Slingsby (left) co-helmed for American Magic in the 37th America\u2019s Cup with Paul Goodison (right). Even allowing for the number of Australians already signed up for other teams (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/americas-cup\/nathan-outteridge-new-zealands-2024-americas-cup-skipper-153330\">Nathan Outteridge<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/emirates-team-new-zealand\">Emirates Team New Zealand<\/a> for one), he is left with no shortage of impressive candidates from which to choose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy job is to pull together a good team and create a culture in that team. And if we can create the sort of culture that we had in the team of Australia II that would be a huge achievement,\u201d said Simmer, who also feels confident that their tight program has some advantages:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nice thing about tight on time and a pretty tight on budget \u2013 tight but adequate \u2013 is that you don\u2019t waste time on science projects!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking online while in transit from the recent Bermuda Sail GP event, Tom Slingsby was clearly delighted to be skippering an all-Australian team, having previously been a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/news\/americas-cup-how-oracle-won-558\">US Oracle team that won the Cup in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136226\" class=\"wp-image-136226 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/keyassets.timeincuk.net\/inspirewp\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/01\/YAW269.Slingsbyprofile.gmr_ac34sepd10_9656_3-630x354.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" \/>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slingsby with Ben Ainslie on sailing for Oracle USA. Photo: Gilles Martin-RagetReferring to the long gap between Australian challenges for the Cup, Tom Slingsby recalled a conversation he had with his then room-mate Glenn Ashby just prior to the 2008 Olympics,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember us saying \u2018One day we\u2019ll get our shot\u2019 and it\u2019s been almost 20 years since then, but here we are!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Ashby comes in swinging<\/h2>\n<p>For Glenn Ashby, just being present in person at the announcement was an extraordinary achievement, barely five days after breaking his leg in Bermuda during a SailGP race and undergoing surgery, before flying home to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Channelling his own gritty character, which has seen him making little of a very significant injury, Ashby responded to a question about how the team would deal with the challenge of a very short runway to the Cup racing in 2027 with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/americas-cup\/like-riding-in-a-tea-pot-through-moguls-why-well-miss-glenn-ashbys-americas-cup-commentary-154993\">classic Aussie idiom<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the strengths of our country is that we\u2019re happy to lean in, swing hard and have a go!\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-130472\" class=\"wp-image-130472 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/keyassets.timeincuk.net\/inspirewp\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/03\/RH_ETNZ_170612_27587-630x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"394\" \/>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glenn Ashby after the 2017 America\u2019s cup win. Photo: Emirates Team New Zealand<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tash Bryant wasn\u2019t even born when the 26-year-old Grant Simmer navigated <em>Australia II<\/em> to its famous 1983 victory and was only a nine year old novice sailor when she watched Tom Slingsby and his skipper Jimmy Spithill pull off the much-celebrated comeback win for the US Oracle team in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Bryant recalls watching women in the Olympics and aspiring to be an elite sailor like them, so she is well aware of the role she can now play for the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see those 13 and 14-year-old girls around the world watching us race on a huge stage, at the highest level of our sport, it gives me goose bumps to think about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162888\" class=\"size-large wp-image-162888\" src=\"https:\/\/keyassets.timeincuk.net\/inspirewp\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/05\/Image-2-%C2%A9-Gilles-Martin-Raget-630x355.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"355\" \/>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia II powers to victory in 1983. Photo: Gilles Martin-Raget<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>New Zealand collaboration<\/h2>\n<p>Team Australia has acquired New Zealand\u2019s 2021 Cup boat <em>Te Rehutai<\/em> which is currently undergoing significant surgery with the help of Emirates Team New Zealand, with whom Team Australia is collaborating on design and construction.
